What does a UX audit actually cover?

A proper UX audit looks at four layers of a product:

Navigation and information architecture. Can users find what they’re looking for without guessing?

Conversion paths. Where does the signup, checkout, or core action lose people? Visual hierarchy. Does the interface direct attention to what matters, or is everything competing for it equally? Accessibility and consistency. Are patterns repeated predictably, and does the product work for users with disabilities?

A surface-level audit stops at visual polish. A useful one traces actual behavior, using analytics, session recordings, or direct testing, and connects each finding to a measurable outcome, like drop-off rate on a specific screen.

When does a product actually need one?

Three situations reliably signal it’s time:

Growth has stalled despite marketing working. Traffic is fine, conversion isn’t. That’s a product problem, not an acquisition problem. The product was built fast and never revisited. Common with MVPs that shipped, found traction, and kept growing on the original interface without anyone auditing whether it still holds up. A redesign is being considered, but nobody can say exactly what’s broken. An audit turns “it feels dated” into a specific, prioritized list, which makes the redesign itself faster and cheaper.

What comes out of a UX audit?

The deliverable is a report, not a mockup. It typically includes:

  • A list of usability issues, ranked by impact and effort to fix

  • Screenshots or recordings showing each issue in context

  • Specific recommendations, not just problem statements

  • A rough estimate of what fixing the highest-impact items would take

Some audits also include a short set of before/after mockups for the two or three highest-priority fixes, to make the recommendation concrete rather than abstract.

How is a UX audit different from a full redesign?

We’re driven by a passion for visual storytelling—design that blends innovation, clarity, and impact. Every decision is made with purpose, ensuring brands feel cohesive, modern, and unmistakably unique. Our process is rooted in experimentation and refinement, enabling us to deliver work

Our philosophy centers around creating design experiences that feel both functional and expressive. We build identities that communicate with honesty, intention, and a refined aesthetic language. Through consistent collaboration and thoughtful iteration.

Revolt Agency runs UX audits as part of its Design Partnership track, a monthly retainer for teams that need senior design support without hiring in-house.
